THE CITY STATE COMMUNITY CALL
THE CITY STATE COMMUNITY CALL is an exploration in creating connections within a city. Through a series of short tasks, you will be sent out to explore, meet new people, and share experiences. At the end of each assignment call the number and answer a question. Your messages and experiences will be used to deepen our collective understanding of this city.
1. ARCHIVES
Your local library doesn’t just contain books, there’s also a wealth of fascinating archives with stories and articles about the history of your city. Head to the local library and find a folk story, an old song, or something you think people in your city should be proud of.
Ready? Call 413-268-4767 and tell us what you discovered.
2. URBAN HIKE
Early in the day, start at a central spot and begin walking without any idea of where you will end up. Allow yourself to get a little lost and let curiosity take over. Explore the unseen corners of your neighborhood or perhaps wander into an unlikely place.
Ready? Call 413-268-4767 and tell us where did you go and what did you find?
3. EXPERIENCE
Visit a nearby coffee shop or community space. Find the bulletin board and choose one activity that looks unusual or interesting on the board. Immediately sign up and attend!
Ready? Call 413-268-4767 and tell us what did you do and who did you meet?
4. CONNECTION
Invite a friend to visit a neighborhood that neither of you have explored. Go to a local cafe or bakery and ask for a recipe or a story about the neighborhood.
Ready? Call 413-268-4767 and share the neighborhood story you were told.
5. GATHERING
Ask a friend to organize a dinner or potluck with you. Make sure that each guest brings somebody you don't know. Use your recipe to make a new dish, or a favorite family recipe, or be ready to tell the story of the neighborhood you visited in step 4.
Ready? Call 413-268-4767 and tell us what stories did your guests share?
6. REFLECTION
Find a quiet and comfortable space away from others. Take five minutes to reflect. Think about your experiences taking part in the City State Community Call. Perhaps there were some things you really enjoyed. Or perhaps there were some difficult moments.
Ready? Call 413-268-4767 and tell us which moments stand out? What did you learn?
